The campaign will start at midnight on Friday 5 June 2020 and end after 11:59pm on Monday 8 June 2020.
What is the “Double Demerits” scheme?
Double Demerits is a road safety enforcement campaign by the NSW Government to encourage safe driver behaviour during holiday and long weekend periods. Any motorists caught breaching specific road rules during these periods will cop a loss of double the prescribed demerits points on their licence.
What offences carry Double Demerits?
The Double Demerit point scheme will only apply to motorists who commit the following offences:
Illegal use of a mobile phone
Riding without a helmet
Not wearing a seatbelt
For example – if you are caught using your mobile phone behind the wheel during the long weekend period, you will incur 10 demerit points and $344 fine.
Please note that Learner and P1 drivers will have their licence suspended for at least three months for any of the above offences when committed in NSW.
How do Demerit points work?
If you have a clean driving record with no offences, you will have zero (0) demerit points. For each offence you commit that carries demerit points, the points are added to your driving record.
How many Demerit points do I have?
Motorist in NSW have the following demerit point limits attached to their licence:
Unrestricted licence: 13 points
Provisional P2 licence: 7 points
Provisional P1 licence: 4 points
Learner licence: 4 points
Professional drivers: 14 points (such as taxi drivers and truck drivers)
Unrestricted licence with a good behaviour period: 2 points within the term of the good behaviour period.
What are the suspensions for exceeding Demerit point limits?
For an unrestricted licence driver, a suspension period is determined on the amount of demerit points you accumulate. The following suspensions occur when you exceed your demerit points:
13 to 15 points: 3-month suspension
16 to 19 points: 4-month suspension
20 or more points: 5-month suspension
